As a homeowner, you may be unsure of when it’s time to replace the windows on your home. Maybe you don’t know how old your current windows are, or are looking for ways to increase energy efficiency in your home, or perhaps you have noticed signs that indicate it’s time to replace some or all of your windows.

If you find yourself in one of these situations, you’re not alone. Many homeowners are unsure of the appropriate timing to replace their windows so we’ve put together a list of signs to watch out for.

Here are the top signs that indicate you may need new windows installed:

You Have High Energy Bills

Depending on the time of year it is, stand near your window and see if the temperature differs from the rest of your home. If it’s winter, is it cooler by the window? Is the glass cold to the touch? These are both indications that the warm air from your home heating system is being cooled as soon as it gets near the window, meaning your heating system has to work overtime to compensate. This will result in higher energy bills during the cold (and hot) months.

The Windows Are Drafty

An easy way to test whether or not you have drafty windows is by holding a candle or stick of incense near the window. Move the candle to each corner and watch the flame to see if it flickers. If it does this is a sign you have drafts coming in through your window and it needs to be replaced.

window that is difficult to open

You Have Difficulty Opening, Closing & Locking Your Windows

Take a walk around your home and open and close each window to see how smoothly they open and close. Do they require you to exert extensive pressure to open or shut? If so, it’s likely time to replacement them.

Windows should open and close effortlessly and smoothly with little effort. While a difficult window may be a sign that your windows are too old and need to be replaced it may also be a sign that your window sill needs to be cleaned. Take a wet rag with some soap and clean your window sills. If the windows still do not open and close easily it may be time to replace them.

The Windows Frame Are Decaying Or You Have Leaky Windows

Decaying window frames are one of the most obvious signs it’s time to replace your windows. Built-up moisture can cause damage and eventually decay which can also become a safety issue. This will often lead to a window that leaks and allows water to enter your home. If you notice this is happening you should immediately replace your windows as this can lead to moisture build-up in your home and promote the growth of mold impacting the structure of your entire home.

It might be tempting to simply try and repair the frame, but this may not completely fix the problem, instead consult with a professional to see if a window repair would address the issue at hand or if you need to replace the window entirely.

Your Windows Do a Poor Job of Soundproofing

You may already know that your windows are allowing a lot of outside noise, but if you’re unsure take a moment to stand quietly by the window. Listen carefully and take note of what you hear, are sounds muffled or can you clearly hear a car driving down the street before they even near your house? Can you hear people outside clearly? If your windows are doing little to mute outside sounds, this is a good indication you need to have your windows replaced.

condensation build up on window

Condensation Has Built Up Between the Glass Layers

Condensation build-up between the glass layers is another sign you need to have your windows replaced. If there is frosting between the layers of glass it means the seals are failing and allowing moisture in between the panes. Once this has happened, you have lost any energy-efficiency the window was providing your home. Once the seals fail, any insulating gas used to make the window energy efficient is now gone and your windows are not functioning properly.

The Windows Are Cracked

This may seem like an obvious sign, but it’s worth mentioning since cracked window glass allow for air to leak in and out of your window with decreases energy-efficiency and compromises the integrity of your window. Cracked glass can also lead to a shattered window which may damage the inside of your home and can cause injuries to anyone inside your home. If you have a cracked window it is imperative to contact a professional as soon as possible to replace the window.

You’re Renovating An Old Home

If you’ve recently purchased or are renovating your home, it’s likely that the windows will need to be replaced. This is especially true if the previous owners don’t know when they installed the windows. Instead of taking a risk and trying to repair window frames or hope for the best, it’s ideal to replace them before you move in.
